Allie Sanzi's Comment: I believe that the Charles Dickens used the final pages of A Tale of Two Cities to end the novel with a hopeful tone for the future. I believe that with his last thoughts, Sydney Carton shows that he is a very selfless person. He gave up his life to spare Darnay's, and, in turn, he preserved Lucie's happiness. Carton acknowledged the fact that Lucie would never love him as she loves Darnay, and that is a very hard idea for a person to accept. I believe that Carton's actions in the last section of the book exemplify the sacrifice and progression of the city of Paris and the country of France. The people of France made great sacrifices in order to begin the process of progression. In addition, the other comments Carton makes about Lucie and Darnay, Manette, and Lorry lead me to believe that despite his addiction to alcohol, he was an honest man who really cared about the people he loved
