Holly: "Sin against the universal reason": "You sin against the universal reason" - as if the sailor's crimes weren't against anything more tangible, but only wrong in light of the mysterious "universal reason". Voltaire seems to be making fun of Pangloss' inability to find meaning or injustice in the here-and-now: Pangloss' only reality is way up in the clouds with the "universal reason".

Holly: Two Things: (1) Honest James seems to be a model Christian, turning the other cheek and all that - and God doesn't seem to care.
(2) "prevented by the philosopher Pangloss" --> Voltaire shows that the best-of-all-worlds rationale is worse than just annoying, because it stops people from actually trying to effect change.
