PUBLIC NOTES

Setting Motif: Emily Brontë uses this description of the setting to describe Miss Cathy and Linton before they were supposed to meet. Sultry means hot and humid when used to describe the weather, but it can also be used to describe a woman of a passionate nature. I think it is interesting that this word is used to both describe the weather and Miss Cathy's feelings before seeing her beloved Linton. The hazy sky represents Linton because he is being covered with a haze. This haze is Heathcliff' trying to use Linton's sickness so Miss Cathy will marry him out of pity and Heathcliff can get her fortune.
