Marisa Monaco I think comment: I think that, at this point in the novel, Sydney Carton can most definitely be considered a hero. Carton decided to give his life in place of Charles Darnay's. Sydney understand that Darnay has a family to provide for and that Darnay has a greater amount of potential to make something of his life. Carton also makes this sacrifice out of his undying love for Lucie. He wants nothing more but for her to find happiness and understands that this will enable her to do so. Many readers will have thought, up to this point, that Carton was wasting his life but this last choice had almost given his life purpose and he has made something positive out of a negative situation. Carton takes the execution because he sees Lucie, with her child and sees the potential happiness and joyfulness of Lucie and Lucie's family's lives. Carton makes a huge sacrifice and makes an extremely moving decision.
