Connections: Sort of Andy Dufresne-like if you ask me. What do you think of his nicknames?

Travel Tracer: This is the kind of time and space passage that should draw your attention. Remember that setting is not just place, but time and condition as well.

Connection: An insight into Russian justice to coordinate with our reading of Ivan Denisovich. Harsh? What about American justice - now and historically?

Characterization: So little is provided by Tolstoy about the wife, but what can we surmise based on what we know about her? Calpurnia, anyone? I'll bet Tolstoy read Shakespeare.

Another LL detail...: What good is it for the author to tell us that one fo his children is small enough to be breast-feeding? Why this detail? Why here?

More Trouble and a connection: Here is where the evidence against Aksionov begins to seem insurmountable. At this point in the story I am reminded of "The Shawshank Redemption." BTW: Stephen King wrote the novella 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.' I'd bet money the King of Horror read some Tolstoy in his youth.

Words: Foreign vocabulary; Words like 'troika' and 'samovar are unfamiliar to us, yet integral to Russian vocabulary - they do not translate. Without looking these up - use context clues and guess their meaning.

Foreshadowing: This is a fairly blunt case of foreshadowing. Tolstoy might as well be hammering you over the head with the 'something bad is going to happen' hints. In my experience, Russian authors aren't big on subtlety - their strengths are more about depth of theme and irony.

If I were the Literary Luminary...: : If I were the Literary Luminary...: This passage would draw my attention. The last sentence, about his countenance and demeanor helping to condemn him grabs my attention. How often do we judge on appearance?

Characterization: This is an example of direct characterization. You don't have to guess, the author tells you explicitly.
