Your Body featured in ELLE magazine: Your Body: The Missing Manual is featured in the "ELLE:Body" spread
in the Nov. 2009 issue of ELLE: Canada (p. 172). Here's the snip:
Comfort zone
A new study by the University of South Carolina might dispel a common
food myth: that people reach for their favourite comfort food when
they are stressed out (think Bridget Jones on an ice cream binge).
Researchers found that subjects who rated their stress level as high
were more likely to choose something unusual to eat rather than a
familiar snack, such as potato chips. But Matthew MacDonald, author of
Your Body: The Missing Manual, disagrees: "People turn to common
comfort foods that can trigger the brain's reward circuritry, release
pain-relieving substances and dampen down stress hormones." Study or
no study, when we're stressed, we want to eat. Pass the salt.
