Fall Season Reflects Falling Romance: This passage represents Miss Catherine's morose personality during the fall season of October of November. In the last chapter, Ellen Dean prohibits the flow of love notes between Miss Catherine and Linton Heathcliff which takes place in the summer. This summer high for Catherine is followed by a fall in excitement and happiness as the season changes, and "withered leaves" move about the ground. This dreary atmosphere reflects Miss Catherine's "low-spirited" countenance as her romance seems to have halted. The passage also mentions Mr. Edgar's decline while the sky "half hidden by clouds" brings "abundant rain."
