The King of Bohemia: The Ruler of Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic) during this time was Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria. He was a member of the Hapsburg family, known for the Hapsburg Lip, a prominent lower lip that in some members of the family was so pronounced as to be disfiguring. Holmes and Love: Despite the clear statement here that Hollmes would never fall in love pairing Holmes up is hugely popular. Perhaps we can't bear to think of our hero alone? Those who write slash fiction with Holmes/Watson could say that here Watson protests too much in order to conceal the truth.

There was but one Woman? : I'm somewhat addicted to the Mary Russell books by Laurie R. King in which Holmes meets another woman who is his match. I'm currently reading the most recent one, The Language of Bees, in which we meet ***SPOILER FOR LANGUAGE OF BEES***** Holmes' son by Irene Adler who he had a brief relationship with after she was widowed. Re-reading this now one has to imagine Watson as an unreliable narrator to make that work and it gives a different tone.
