Weismann Comment: Hester says that she brings Pearl who was necessarlity the companion of all of her expeditions. Do you think that she likes bringing Pearl around with her everywhere? Do you think that she feels like she has to? I believe that Hester feels lonely in the world and Pearl is the only one that will openly be with her and show her emotion about Hester. Dimmesdale always turns them down when they ask to walk with them in public, Hester needs someone to be there for here whenever she needs someone. Pearl fits the part and does not judge her mother. If Hester ever needed someone to watch Pearl while she had to go out, I do not think she would have an easy time finding someone. Throughout the rest of the book I think that Hester will always be around Pearl and not make other friends. This foreshadows that Hester might not ever make friends and not be lonely.

Weismann Comment: For how smart Pearl is, she does not have good memory. She has seen Dimmmesdale many times, he has even kissed her and she cannot recall who he is. Pearl might be trying to call attention to her mother by reminding her that Dimmesdale is over there. She might want to keep bugging her mother about him so that she will want to tell the truth. Pearl is the truth, so if the truth keeps bugging the hidden secret, it might make her finally tell the community. Hester needs Pearl in her life to keep her on track and away from the "black man" that tries to pull her in. Has Pearl been a help to Hester in her life or has she only made things worse in Hester's life? I think she did make things worse because Hester committed a crime, but since Pearl has been born she has kept her mother on the right track. Pearl has foreshadowed that goods will come to Hester.

Weismann Comment: At the end of this chapter Hester is finally coming to reality that she actually has a baby and she committed adultery. As she touches the letter and looks at the baby she thinks of shame. She already knows that what she has done is wrong and now she has a baby and a letter to wear to prove it. The punishment in the Puritan society is a lot greater than it is now. Do you think that if someone committed adultery now would they think of shame as Hester does? I believe that someone who committed adultery would think of shame but not when they see their baby. They should think of a miracle and not symbolize their baby and shame together. It is different for Hester because she also has to look at the scarlet letter constantly to remind her of the crime that she has committed. She only thinks of this now because she said that everything else has vanished.

Weismann Comment: It makes me mad that Chillingworth goes about acting like he does not know Hester while she is the wife of him. He acts like he can get away with anything and plays undercover instead of trying to help out Hester. She did disobey him and is getting punished for what she has done, but i feel that if he was married to her he should care about her enough to help her out. He is lying to the townsman that he is talking to which is not good for him to be doing bad things this early in the story. Do you think that he is going to tell the community who he really is? Do you think that it will help Hester and her problem, or only make it worse? I am not sure if his telling the community who he is will really help out her problem, but it will make her feel better that he is not lying and acting like he does not know who she is, which i am sure hurts her.

Weismann Comment: I think that when Dimmesdale kissed Pearl that symbolized that the kiss was a lie and could not be put on the forehead of truth which is Pearl. He has not yet told the community his sin and until he does Pearl will not keep a kiss from him on her. The author describes the kiss as unwelcome and that means that Pearl has not accepted Dimmesdale yet. Do you think that Dimmesdale is ever going to tell the community of his sin? What do you think will happen to him after he lets out such a huge mystery? I think he will end up telling the community because the guilt will get the best of him and make him go crazy until he tells. I think the town will be hard on him and maybe even make death his punishment. Since he waited so long, he has to live with the guilt and made his punishment probably even worse than it woudl have been if he came out and told the truth early.

Weismann Comment: I feel bad for Hester here because she was so excited to finally get the scarlet letter off of her chest. Now Pearl is making a fit and will not cross the brook unless her mother will put the letter back on her bosom. After she put on the letter she put her hair back up beneath her cap as it was before. She tried to take a step forward in her life by moving on, and now Pearl (the truth) keeps haunting her and coming back. Is Hester ever going to be able to take the letter off for good? I think she will eventually tell Pearl everything and that will make her feel better to take the letter off. I also think it is sad how when she put the letter on the sunlight went away and a shadow appeared over her. Where ever she seems to go with the letter, the sun will not shine and she will have a gloomy cloud over her. She needs to tell Pearl the truth and take the letter off for good.
