This quote shows that Gregor Samsa was one of the working forces in the family and his transformation into a cockroach put both Gregor Samsa and his father into a state of unemployment or at least an unpaid hiatus from their jobs, even though they had no money coming in there was still enough to scrape by until Gregor Samsa dies or transforms back into his original self.
