Comparison between Conflict of Values and Pangloss: The paragraph on professor Pangloss can be compared with our Restoration notes on Conflict of Values. It shows how Pangloss was attached to logical deductions and immutable law and order, which was different from values abstract and experimental sciences that were being taken on. The idea of cause and effect is a logical deduction that Pangloss makes for the entire castle.

petty baron
: This description of Barons power as lord is petty because it is only based upon the fact that his castle had a gate and windows. Both are qualities that do not make a good lord, they only make him notable for his "cool gadgets" in his castle. This shows the pettiness of the upper class, and how they are more focused on unimportant things such as frivolous materials instead of the character that makes a person.
