PUBLIC NOTES

rheumatic wheels: Ha! Joyce cracks me up sometimes. Neither the narrator nor anyone even seems to notice her malapropism, but it's quite stark. More stilted politeness in this awkward time.

punning: The story begins in such wicked humor; the third stroke, third strike; the strike of three (a.m.) as we wait out the window in the dark, more curious about what death is than any true concern for the dying. He's more theologian than acolyte . . .

Full lyrics?: Commentators insist that this line is the child's corruption of his dad's correct line, "On the little green place." I don't buy it. "Place" should, apparently, be "grave" anyway, so it's already wrong. Full lyrics of the song would be useful! \ Anyway, the line sugests something like green "woe" or "wore" on the both (the grave and the rose both wear green).
