PUBLIC NOTES

Lyell and Creationists: Starting at "But geologists are becoming more and more loath..." to the end of the paragraph: This argument of Lyell's is used by creationists to "disprove" evolutionary theory -- because of the length of time involved in slow erosion without cataclysmic events. I just read about this the other day at a site called Index to Creationism, which rebuts hundreds of creationist talking points. The rebuttal to this one is that contemporary geologists have modified their understanding of Lyell to include cataclysmic events. In other words, when the creationists use Lyell's theory about erosion to argue that evolution is wrong, they are working from an outdated theory that no longer conforms to present-day scientific thinking. It was so exciting to read this sentence and immediately make that mental connection to something else I had read!

It takes faith: It takes faith to believe in evolutionary theory -- more faith than it takes to believe in a superhuman being who created everything with intent and conscious will. What a paradox!

Awesome run-on!: Documented proof that, in the hands of a masterful writer, the longest sentence is coherent and beautiful.

Beginnings of Life: So when does an individual human life begin? This suggests that there is no sharp dividing line between existence and non-existence. Life is not jump-started from dead flesh.

Ontogeny and Phylogeny: I think this is a reference to the "ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny" theory -- the idea that an individual organism's prenatal development repeats the evolutionary stages of the species to which the organism belongs. I just did some quick research, and found out that this theory has been discredited, but it's not entirely untrue. A developing human child in the womb, for example, does have physical characteristics that mimic human evolutionary development, but it's not literally every stage of human evolution in succession. It's more like clues to evolutionary stages rather than repeating it all over again.

The Wonder of Life: What a marvelous perception! That the idea of an evolutionary process that has worked through nature for millions of years is more extraordinary and amazing than the idea of an omnipotent being who created everything in an instant, or in six days!

God and Evolution: Burroughs does not capitalize the initial letters in "creative energy," but it seems to me he's talking about God -- or divinity, or whatever word one wants to choose. The creative force -- God -- works through biological processes.
