Excellent introduction: Austen is at her best in this introduction. She implicitly calls her her heroin ugly and explicitly calls her stupid. What a way to set things up! But of course the genius of Austen shines through in that she somehow makes us love Catherine more and more as the plot progresses, in spite of the ugly and stupid beginnings.
