PUBLIC NOTES

Becker: Prompt 4: I think that this paragraph is applicable to one of our beliefs today. In our culture, we typically believe that if you don't like something, such as playing a sport that does not really appeal to you, you should quit it. It's not worth wasting your time doing something that evokes no joy. Frankenstein appears to be on the same level of understanding this idea of today, especially when he says, " If the study to which you apply yourself has a tendency to weaken your affections....then that study is certainly unlawful". Apparently, he feels strongly against pursuing something that gives you misery.

Becker: Prompt 4: After Frankenstein receives his list of books to read, he displays a bored attitude about these books. He finds them useless and has no desire to read them. This is similar to today's culture where many students are disinterested in books, such as summer reading books, that we are required to read.

Becker: Prompt 1: I think that this paragraph demonstrates the English value of science. Frankenstein is apparently interested in learning more about the scientific world, and obtaining more knowledge. This also supports the reason over religion idea because Frankenstein leans toward science.

Becker: Prompt 1: This paragraph exemplifies how education was prevalent during this time period. Clerval is depicted to be very learned, because "he loved enterprise, hardship, and even danger for its own sake. He was deeply read in books of chivalry and romance...." Clerval, therefore, exemplifies the English value of experience, manners (books of chivalry), and reason.

Becker: prompt 2: The age of reason was based on rationalism, where they were free from religion and based their lives on science and understanding. Frankenstein contradicts this because he says that "it was the secrets of heaven and earth that I desired to learn..." He is focused on religion rather than reason.
