My brother had just been appointed Secretary of Nevada Territory--an office of such majesty that it concentrated in itself the duties and dignities of Treasurer, Comptroller, Secretary of State, and Acting Governor in the Governor's absence.

I was big on Kurt Vonnegut in high school, found my way to Mark Twain after graduation. I'll try anything once, though.

I enjoy an eclectic mix of character-driven fiction in many genres. As an author myself, I also read a lot of non-fiction in many subject areas. But in fiction, the most important story element is characterization: convincing characters, complex interactions between characters, character-driven conflict... and happy endings. I want heroes I can sympathize with and who come through in the end.
Some of my favorite books of all time: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein, Tales of Pirx the Pilot (and More Tales...), by Stanislaw Lem. I enjoy most of what these authors have written, as well as Holly Lisle, Harlan Ellison, and Ann Brashares.
