I read and like a lot of different kinds of books. I'm a big fan of SF and related genres. I love Jane Austen. Among my all-time favorite authors is Nevil Shute but Dan Jenkins runs him a close race, as does Michael Shaara (but not Shaara's son, Jeff). More favorites: Philip K. Dick, Robert A. Heinlein, William Gibson (Pattern Recognition is a truly wonderful book and you don't need to know or care about SF to find it fascinating.), Robertson Davies, Donald Hamilton, John D. MacDonald, Leo Tolstoy, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Mario Vargas Llosa, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Michael Connelly, James Lee Burke, Harper Lee, J. G. Ballard, Terry Bisson, Brian Moore, Farley Mowat, Joe Haldeman, Ian Frazier, Martin Amis, John M. Ford, James Ellroy, Joan Didion, John Gregory Dunne, Thomas M. Disch, Gustav Hasford, Michael Herr, Georgette Heyer (but not so much the mysteries), L. Rust Hills, Ernie Kovacs, Mell Lazarus. And lots more.

2nd shelf: theory (poststructuralist, translation, literary).
3rd shelf: borges, spanish lit, people i'm translating, catalan dictionary.
4th: sex books, course books, misc.
but where oh where have my novels gone? literary fiction is next to godliness.

I like to pretend to be awfully smart and read philosophy books. Other times, I like well-written words, intense text and light comedy.
I'm one of those crazy people who can laugh out loud in the public after reading a hilarious passage.

Typical overgrown boy fiction.
Murder mysteries, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, graphic novels and anything else that excites your typical geek.
I also like regular old standard popular fiction, sports writing (but not so much with the memoirs) and anything to do with art in any of it's many forms. And kid's books (picture books). Good stuff.
Really, I guess I'll read anything except romance. Not a big fan of the romance.

I enjoy an eclectic mix of character-driven fiction in many genres. As an author myself, I also read a lot of non-fiction in many subject areas. But in fiction, the most important story element is characterization: convincing characters, complex interactions between characters, character-driven conflict... and happy endings. I want heroes I can sympathize with and who come through in the end.
Some of my favorite books of all time: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein, Tales of Pirx the Pilot (and More Tales...), by Stanislaw Lem. I enjoy most of what these authors have written, as well as Holly Lisle, Harlan Ellison, and Ann Brashares.
