As an inveterate autodidact, I mostly dig on non-fiction. My fave genre is narrative non-fiction, although I have a soft spot for 19th century novels.

I am pretty voracious in my reading; I tend to read more fiction than non-fiction. I do shy away from graphic violence or torture. It is bad enough they exist in the real world, I don't want to read it.

I'm a fan of sci-fi novels, though usually not ones set in space. I also like romance novels, especially lesbian romance novels, and the classics like Pride & Prejudice. Recently I've started reading more non-fiction books too.

I enjoy an eclectic mix of character-driven fiction in many genres. As an author myself, I also read a lot of non-fiction in many subject areas. But in fiction, the most important story element is characterization: convincing characters, complex interactions between characters, character-driven conflict... and happy endings. I want heroes I can sympathize with and who come through in the end.
Some of my favorite books of all time: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein, Tales of Pirx the Pilot (and More Tales...), by Stanislaw Lem. I enjoy most of what these authors have written, as well as Holly Lisle, Harlan Ellison, and Ann Brashares.

Non-fiction. Only fiction manuscripts I'll read are the classics and those prior to the 1950s before all the celebrity-writers came in and became millionaires on 'entertainment'.
