There were still, in 1968, a few people who were afraid of the nuclear power plant. Oldsters, in whom the term "atomic energy" produced semantic reactions associated with Hiroshima.

It was not mere impulsive action when Bron Hoddan started for the planet Walden by stowing away on a ship that had come to his native planet to hang all his relatives.

So thrilling were my experiences during that period, so overcrowded with feverish action and strong emotions was each wonderful moment, and so entirely changed are the conditions of life as I now find it, that it is with considerable difficulty that I recall in detail all that happened prior to my remarkable discovery which opened communication between Earth and Mars.

Lord Barrick Sorban, Colonel, H.I.M.O.G., Ret., sipped gently at his drink and looked mildly at the sheaf of newsfacsimile that he'd just bought fresh from the reproducer in the lobby of the Royal Hotel. Sorban did not look like a man of action; he certainly did not look like a retired colonel of His Imperial Majesty's Own Guard. The most likely reason for this was that he was neither.

Shea had just beaten me at chess, as usual, and, also as usual, I had gleaned what questionable satisfaction I might by twitting him with this indication of failing mentality by calling his attention to the nth time to that theory, propounded by certain scientists, which is based upon the assertion that phenomenal chess players are always found to be from the ranks of children under twelve, adults over seventy-two or the mentally defective—a theory that is lightly ignored upon those rare occasions that I win.

I enjoy an eclectic mix of character-driven fiction in many genres. As an author myself, I also read a lot of non-fiction in many subject areas. But in fiction, the most important story element is characterization: convincing characters, complex interactions between characters, character-driven conflict... and happy endings. I want heroes I can sympathize with and who come through in the end.
Some of my favorite books of all time: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, by Robert A. Heinlein, Tales of Pirx the Pilot (and More Tales...), by Stanislaw Lem. I enjoy most of what these authors have written, as well as Holly Lisle, Harlan Ellison, and Ann Brashares.
